Volunteering

With very few paid staff, the railway is completely reliant on its volunteers to maintain it and run the trains. Without the volunteers, the railway would not open and not trains would run.

Volunteers provide their time in many different tasks, such as -

  • On the footplate as a driver or fireman
  • Maintaining and restoring engines and stock
  • As Guard to operate the trains
  • Maintaining the trackwork and signalling
  • Staffing the booking office, shop and restaurant
  • Maintaining the buildings and grounds
  • Promoting the Railway
  • Welcoming and helping our visitors

Whatever your background or skills, and however much time you can give to the railway (even if only a couple of hours), everyone is welcome. Full training is provided and your skills and confidence will grow with the help of long-standing and experienced volunteers.

To become a volunteer, you need to join the East Somerset Railway . Once a member, just turn up and offer your services - you will be assured of a warm welcome.
