Progress December 2011
With the help of the heritage railway press, it is believed there is a realistic chance of generating the funds to not only purchase the locomotive but to also complete the overhaul. The Trust and an appeal for funds was launched in June 2011. Progress has been good and to date half the money required to purchase the locomotive has been raised.
The response from members of the East Somerset Railway and other people keen to see the locomotive restored has been most encouraging.
With recent successful overhauls such as that of 5637, the ESR workshops have demonstrated the competence to tackle major boiler repairs. Many railways do not possess this level of expertise and are obliged to subcontract boiler work, at greatly increased cost. Making use of this capability will therefore help to keep down the cost of the overhaul.
