Getting into the spirit of it

Evacuee Experience

Help bring history to life with our Evacuee Experience. As well as a train ride in an old fashioned steam train, there will be some sound effects over the station tannoy to provide some atmosphere these include war time speeches, air raid sirens, low flying bombers which still scare us and some music of the day. We will also enact a billeting scene where the children who have been evacuated are sent to live with local people and assigned jobs. The children will also be given a tour of the signal box where they can pull the levers and a tour of our workshop where they can see the trains up close and personal, as well as a small museum displaying railway memorabilia this could help fit in with any transport lessons you may do. Finally to help keep the kids entertained we have an evacuation trail with a small prize for the winner picked out at random.

Lunch can be taken on the picnic tables outside where there is a small play area for the children to burn off some excess energy or if it is raining you could take lunch in the café or on the train.

Dressing up in period clothes is an excellent idea which all add to the atmosphere and the children may like to bring home made gas mask boxes, a small suitcase and in the past previous groups have made their own diaries where they can write pretend letters home describing their ride to the countryside and the jobs and families they have been assigned to.

Please get in touch if you would like to book this experience or if you would like more details.
