Footplate courses

Imagine…the sound of the locomotive as it climbs the 1 in 56 incline, its crisp bark echoing from the sides of the cutting. And with you at the controls!

Whether for yourself or a gift for another, the experience of driving an engine is unforgettable! But be warned – it can be addictive. We offer two courses, both of which give you the chance to experience the thrills of driving and firing a steam locomotive, under the guidance of our skilled and dedicated footplate crews.

You may also hear of the golden age of steam from retired mainline drivers, or the pride of learning to drive from our younger members! All have something to share with you, and their love of the machinery they operate will be all too evident!

If these are too much, or if you are not sure if you want to try it, we run regular 'Driver-for-a-Fiver' events where you can drive an engine up and down a siding for the princely sum of £5. These are run on special event days.
